Reading Before Bed

Last year I read 100 books. Some would say that is a lot; others would say that isn't anything special. I feel I'm somewhere in between. That is only two books a week.

People ask me how I read 100 books with a toddler. The answer is simple--I read before bed. I don't read any other time during the day. But, bedtime is my time to get lost in a good book.

I read only as much as I want. Sometimes I'm only a few pages in before my eyes are fluttering and I'm a goner. Other times I am so into a good book that I literally can not stop reading. Then I find myself finishing a book at 2 am.

Morning comes and I don't regret it. Un-interrupted reading time is priceless.

Fact:: The more you read the faster a reader you will become. Your brain gets trained in the art of reading and before you know it you'll be zipping through those pages. The fastest I can read is 100 pgs an hour. I time myself every once in awhile. Nerd alert!

Have a look and see what I'll be reading in March.

Better Than Chocolate by Sheila Roberts
Prodigy by Marie Lu
Seraphina by Rachel Hartman
Scarlet by Marissa Meyer
The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

What are you reading? Anything good? Let's have it.

  1. Reading the 4th (or is it 5th?) Game of Thrones book on my Kindle, listening to War Horse on my mp3 player when I can't sleep, and listening to Bossy Pants (Tina Fey) on my phone when I'm running. Also reading a bajillion blogs online most days. ;)

I need more hours in the day to read more. I almost hate it when I get sleepy at night because I want to keep reading! lol

    1. Audiobooks are where it's at! I can't clean my flat without one. I also feel like I'm being sneaky. Getting a book read while I do errands and clean seems like I'm cheating. I love it!

  2. Hi Mary! Greetings from Canada. I haven't introduced myself yet, but I've been reading through all your blog posts over the past couple of weeks, and I'm finally all caught up. I have loved reading about your life in Scotland, and it's been fun to see how you have developed as a person and as a family over the past five years. My husband and I have lived overseas (Singapore, Turkey, Papua New Guinea) so I know what it's like to be an ex-pat. I can relate to so many things you've experienced. We just travelled to Scotland last summer - it was the most gorgeous, breathtaking experience of my life! We talk about moving there some day, but for now that's just a dream.
Anyway, to answer your question...these days I'm reading 44 Scotland Street by Alexander McCall Smith. His #1 Ladies Detective Agency Series was fabulous so I had to check out another one of his. So far, so good!

    1. Hi Hannah, Thanks for reading!

I love hearing from other expats. When I look back at my little blog I wish I would have written more over these past 5 yrs. I wish there were more pictures. I'm trying to change that now. I want to remember all the little things that have made up our life here.

My Mom and sister read The Ladies Detective Agency and went crazy over it! I need to read it. I'm in need of something different and fun.

  3. That's a lot of pages in an hour - I've never timed myself!

Right now I'm reading a book by Jan Karon, In the Company of Others which is the second of the Father Tim books. Read the first one last week, Home to Holly Springs.

The next two library books sitting by my reading chair are The Forgotten Affairs of Youth and The Uncommon Appeal of Clouds, both by Alexander McCall Smith. I love all his books.

  4. Almost ALL of those books are on my TBR pile I am very envious! :-) Right now I am reading Pure by Julianna Baggott. I have no idea what it's about but the cover has a title that is on fire and I saw it and decided it was FOR ME. Didn't even read the blurb. I'm such a maverick!
